Welcome and thank you for visiting the home of BIJO Boer Goats, owners Bill and Joan Smith. We are located in Gardners, PA which is part of scenic Cumberland County. Our spacious land covers 12 acres surrounded by the Michaux State Forest and bordered, at the back of our property, by the famous Appalachian Trail.
For as long as we can remember, we always seemed to have a goat or two around. In 1999, we had the fortunate opportunity to purchase a small herd of eight “brush” goats. We really enjoyed the experience of raising goats and found that we loved spending time watching our herd.
In October of 2001, we met a man who was selling his herd of 23 Boer goats. No one in our area had any of these brown-headed goats or even knew anything about them. We weren’t looking to purchase any more goats but, curiosity got the best of us and we went to look at this new breed of meat goats. Needless to say, we purchased the herd and we entered into the Boer goat business.
In our new herd of goats there were some registered goats. We had never heard of registered Boer goats, so the first thing we did was call the International Boer Goat Association, Inc. They were absolutely terrific with helping us through the paper trail of getting our new goats registered properly.
Our herd came with two 100% Fullblood solid red bucks. We chose to keep the youngest buck and we registered him as BIJO Bill, and our herd sire was established. BIJO Bill set the genetic precedent for our current Boer goat business.
Our current herd is made up of Reds, Blacks, Paints, Spotted, Dapples and Traditional colored Fullblood, Purebred, Percentage and Commercial Boer Goats.
After coming a long way from where we first started, our goal is to produce quality meat goats to enhance the Boer goat industry. We would like to help future meat goat producers start in the Boer goat business, no matter how small they start off.
Our top priority always has been, and always will be, honesty first and selling second. |
